Student Work - Summer 2018 - Oaxaca Mexico

Free Photography Workshops Series for the Mixe community.

Back to the Lab teamed up with native photographer, Conrado Perez of Jamyatstaajk Gallery, to create a six session, basic photography course for eight students as the first in an ongoing series of photo workshops for the community. The goal of this photography workshop series is to empower Mixe (pronounced "meehay") youth with the photographic skills required to document and preserve their own experiences and history.

With fundraising and logistical help from Direct Impact Coalition, we successfully launched the first installment of this workshop in November of 2018. Conrado Perez and Marko Jokic (of Back to the Lab) co-instructed the classes. Thanks to generous donations, we acquired the necessary photographic equipment and funds for Jamyatstaajk Gallery to continue offering free workshops to the community at a sustainable cost going forward.

Continued support for this workshop series is needed so that a legacy of photography can begin to thrive from within.

Through successful fundraising, Conrado has completed two workshop cycles!
